Had we not taken Nonnino out of his cramped, dilapidated cage at the Constanza public shelter that day, he would almost certainly have spent the rest of his days there. Deaf and almost completely blind, our hearts went out to him from the minute we first caught a glimpse of him.

An elderly dog should never be left to live in a shelter, least of all in a facility like that one, where hundreds of dogs live in unacceptable conditions, with a mortality rate higher than 50%.

We knew that finding a family for an elderly dog like Nonnino wouldn’t be easy. Yet we simply couldn’t leave him behind, and he became one of the 13 dogs we rescued at the end of July.

Nonnino has now been able to leave the quarantine room at our clinic, where we monitored him for two weeks to ensure that he hadn’t contracted any infectious diseases. He has finally been able to feel the grass beneath his paws, meet other animals and be showered with some much-deserved affection by our staff.

We will soon present Nonnino to our adoption partners in Northern Europe, in the hope of finding a family who can offer him the peaceful, dignified life he deserves in his remaining years. Until that day comes, he will stay with us at Footprints of Joy, where he can enjoy long walks and feel safe and sound all day long.

Follow us on social media to meet the other dogs we have rescued.

Had we not taken Nonnino out of his cramped, dilapidated cage at the Constanza public shelter that day, he would almost certainly have spent the rest of his days there.
